Prayas - an amazing expression of creativity and beauty by students of Vranda Arts. Loved the energy and excitement of young kids as they explained their work and thought process.

Thanks to Vranda Rathi for inspiring the kids and giving the same platform as senior artists at Hutheesing Visual Art Centre. Thanks to Vranda’s mentoring and the awesome talent of young minds, I am confident we will see independent art exhibition of her proteges very soon! The future is bright, beautiful and spectacularly bewitching!

Jalsa: A Gripping Layered Moral Drama What happe Jalsa: A Gripping Layered Moral Drama

What happens when an apostle of truth tries to hide something?
What happens when momentary lapse threatens to derail an entire career and image?
What happens to ethics and values when life stress tests it?

Jalsa is a story of two unequal yet equal women whose life changes due to a twist of fate. Maya Menon is the face of truth of a digital channel. An accident threatens to derail her career and life. She is a mother of specially abled son who shares a great rapport with house-maid Rukshana and grandmother. Rukshana is a maid from the margins who makes an attempt to hold on to a life of dignity. She takes pride in her work and honesty like her boss Maya.

Maya is imperfect, sassy, bossy, vulnerable, confused, rebellious, smart.
Rukshana is real, raw, righteous, proud, hopeful, humane.

The outburst of Maya on her defenceless son is one of the highlights.

A great potential lay in other characters. Young journalist who is obstinate and wanting to break a story. An honest cop who is fearing a blemish on verge of his retirement. A youngster crazy about social media likes. Divorced husband. But the director ensures that the focus is on the core story and two strong fiery women.

The movie is not judgemental. The conflict is hidden. No over attention-seeking melodrama. Beyond gender and religion. It has one of the best beginnings that keeps you hooked. Great production values.

The ending will determine the way you relate to the movie. Weird like Maya and life? Improbable? Or a hurried climax - which not everyone appreciates!

Watch it!

Breathtaking. Stylish. Hypnotic.

The Big Screen Extravaganza from 'Bahubali' Rajamouli.
Fast and Furious with 'Naacho Naacho'
Gladiator with Bromance!

Adjectives aside, Rise Roar Revolt (RRR) is a paisa vasool entertainer with overflowing action, creative thrills and visual marvels.

A story of two revolutionaries - Fire Raju and Water Bheem - who take on the might of British empire. Bheem is on a mission to rescue a little girl that is forcefully taken away by a British Lord Scott and his cruel wife. Raju is a a loyal officer whose assignment is to stop and arrest Bheem. Rajamouli weaves the magic and melodrama as ‘friends turn foe turn friends’.

The Fire & Water elements are presented in a compelling fashion. The camaraderie is authentic. Watch-out for spell-bounding drama - the unleashing of animals, the bridge scene, Raju's capture of a freedom fighter etc. 'Naacho Naacho' song deserves a special credit.

The film is not without its flaws. The film drags in the second half and story does not hold firmly. The emotional depth is missing. Ajay Devgan & Alia Bhatt ensure Bollywood diversity in their cameos.

Despite its length and loopholes, RRR's magic works like a charm. The film is technically perfect with awesome production values and world-class Hollywood matching VFX.

Bahubali with its romance, emotional core, revenge, Katappa and overall glamour remains a much better Rajamouli movie.

RRR - Load, Aim & Shoot! Watch it on the big screen only!

The Kashmir Files Review: A Heart-Wrenching Story The Kashmir Files Review: A Heart-Wrenching Story That Needs To Be Told!

Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ is a heart-wrenching story of the massacre of Kashmiri Pandits and their forced displacement from their own homeland. The movie is based on the testimonies of Kashmiri Pandit victims.

The story is driven from the perspective of Krishna Pandit (Darshan) who is fighting a college election on the ‘Kashmir Cause’. He is divided between his college professor’s political views and his personal family history. His grand father Pushkar Nath Pandit (Anupam Kher) and his story is central to the movie.

Anupam Kher gives a masterclass in acting and is the core of the movie. He gives movie the emotional depth - which is otherwise missing in the movie. watch out for his dementia portion or his crying suffering! Awesome!

Pallavi Joshi (Co-producer and Director’s wife) is very impressive as Professor Menon and makes the desired impact. Mithun Chakroborty and the ensemble cast could have done better. Darshan Kumar is confused.

The movie is lengthy and could have done with better editing. It becomes a documentary. The screenplay clearly falters in second half and movie defeats its own purpose - sounding like a sermon. The movie leaves a lot to imagination about actual governments and outfits and operators - not artistic representation but sticking to a narrative of its own.

Badhaai Do Review: A Lavender Marriage Story Yaar Badhaai Do Review: A Lavender Marriage Story

Yaar koi samajhta nahi… Aur samjhana kyun hai?”
(No one understands. Why explain?)

Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar are closeted members of LGBTQ+ community, who struggle to live a normal life. They forge a marriage of convenience to dodge family pressures and taunts while living their own real lives in a clandestine manner. Comic twists and turns create interesting situations.

The movie depicts an excellent picture of the dynamics of small-town families when a ‘disease’ is detected in the family - stereotype reactions, stigma, rejections etc. Equally beautiful is the sensitive portrayal of emotional upheavals of the homosexuals. A few scenes indeed are truly heart touching and move you!

Rajkumar Rao is in majestic form as a ‘Homocop’ while Bhumi shines as an unapologetic lesbian. They are comfortable in their skin and both the actors shine! Rajkumar’s suffocation is visible in his uniform, mannerism and restrained behavior. One can be MCP despite not being straight. Loved the North Eastern newcomer Chum Durang as a lead and she does a valiant job as she owns the screen with panache! Gulshan Deviah rocks in a short cameo. The strong ensemble cast does an outstanding job and lift the ordinary scenes to next level.

The music is excellent - check out songs: Atak Gaya, Hum The Seethe Saadhe, Maange Manzooriyan. Stong screenplay and good writing. But the movie is stretched and narrative goes off-track. Often the film tries too hard and comedy does dilute the impact - but it does not trivialise or disrespect the suffering of homosexuals.

After Shubh Mangal Zyaada Savdhaan and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Tok Aisa Laga, Badhaai Do carries forward the conversation on same-sex marriages. Aligarh remains the best LGBTQ+ move!

Badhaai Do is a good movie but could have been bolder and braver!
